You realize this if from like the 60’s?
The current explanation is that he has the ability of “tactile telekinesis.” All Kryptonians can fly in earth’s gravity. They evolved a telekinetic capacity because the gravity of their own planet increased very slowly during their evolution as a species.

Okay, so I watched Superman Returns and I want to know, did they just erase what happened in Superman III & IV? I’d understand if they did, because those movies were l-a-m-e, but it wasn’t very clear.

Okay, this was a too-subtle protest against disconnected logic and failure to fact-check. The Superman reference was just a parallel.
