Nichelle Has Been Scheming

My wife has been scheming for the past few weeks. I knew something was up, because she would do things like call me on my cell phone, and have the kids chorus, “Neener, neener, neener.” I also ought to have been extremely suspicious, because she volunteered to drop the kids off at day camp, which involved the extra task of getting Naomi ready to leave the house early. All of the usual items were off the list. It wasn’t my birthday, and it wasn’t our anniversary, and Father’s Day has already passed. I have a history of puzzling things out from the smallest of clues, so she wasn’t going to provide even a hint as to what she was up to.

Today was no exception. I knew she wasn’t home because she’d said she would be out of the house all day, and she hadn’t logged on to the computer. This time, however, she assured me that I would find out this evening what was going on.

To my complete surprise (I don’t think I would have figured this out even with a small hint), Nichelle presented me with an extremely well-made dress that she made for Naomi. With the help of our friend Trish Dunn, Nichelle has been learning to sew, something that she has wanted to do for years.

Typical of my wife, her first project was amazingly well done, as the photo above shows. It seems that anything she wants to tackle comes easily to her, from sewing to cutting hair.

Of course, she’s really looking forward to sewing all John’s school clothes for next year. 😉

I’ve already quoted part of Proverbs 31 when talking about Nichelle, but here are a few more appropriate verses from the same chapter:

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. 20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

  1. I was thrilled that Doug was unable to figure out what was going on. Now, I must add, the sewing machine was up from the basement and under the animals table for the first time in this house, basically it collected dust from our last house. I believe the last time it was used, Isaac was our only a toddler. I was also was looking at some other sewing books that I had received from a craft club probably at about the same time the sewing machine was last used. Everything was put away and never seen for nearly 8 years, except for moving them from two houses. So there were a couple of clues around, but he missed them, which was what I was hoping for.

Trish, I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to teach me how to sew and I’m also looking forward to our sewing days to come. Charles and kids, thank you for your patience and giving me so much of your wife’s and Mom’s time, too. The time spent with you was indeed a blessing in so many areas. Thanks again.

As for making John his school clothes, I think not. At least not yet. I do have some other items lined up to make, but the sewing machine needs to be serviced. I hope they’ll be able to do that quickly.

Mark, you mentioned something about a suit, would that be a Batman suit?? I did see a pattern for that. I’ll leave that for Shelby to do. It was a cool looking costume. Perhaps you and Caleb could have matching suits.

Oh, and Doug, ::evil laughter:: Neener, neener, neener ::evil laugter:: Love you ;-P

  2. You go, girl! Now…for my order. I would like a jumper (any solid color will do) and for my size…well, we will have to “talk” because it is not for the internet population to know!!!

  3. Well, then Maryjane, you know to call me with the information then. That should fix him, unless he decides to listen in or bug the phones…hmmm, not to sure now. Do you know shorthand??

  4. Hey Nichelle, I was very happy to teach you to sew. I wish I had had a teacher when I started making stuff for Phoebe. Just remember sewing is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. You just have to make your own peices first. I too am lokking forward to sewing with you.
